The Big Squeeze 15

The Big Squeeze

Welcome to The Big Squeeze! In this edition, we're covering best practices for candidate engagement and spotlighting our Operations Manager, Crystal Chung. Crystal is the magic ingredient boosting the efforts of our team and bringing the best possible experience to our clients and the jobseekers we support on their journey.

About Crystal:

I've been in the Talent Acquisition industry for 13+ years, and I’ve been fortunate to support companies in both startup and enterprise settings. I’m passionate about building people-first hiring strategies and helping organizations grow while supporting individuals in their career journeys.

My recruiting journey started at UC Davis School of Law’s Career Services department, where I helped law students land jobs at firms. That sparked my passion for talent acquisition and guiding people on their career paths. From there, I transitioned into in-house recruiting, first focusing on legal and learning & development in law firms, and eventually making my way into tech, robotics, media and entertainment. Along the way, I’ve had the chance to lead talent acquisition efforts across the U.S., APAC, EMEA, LATAM, and Oceania. One of the most rewarding experiences in my career was during my time as Head of TA at Sony Pictures' Crunchyroll, where I led the expansion of global talent acquisition efforts.

What keeps me in this field is the joy of watching people grow—whether it's helping someone land their first big role or seeing a candidate thrive in a new position. There’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing the right role can change someone's life.

What do you love to do outside of work?
At home, I’ve got a little zoo with two rabbits and a senior dog. I’m trying to keep my piano skills sharp (my deaf dog actually enjoys it, though he’s too polite to give me any constructive feedback!) and I’m relearning the alto-sax. The buns, on the other hand, aren’t exactly fans—they just sleep through it. I’m planning to tackle the cello next. My husband is already bracing himself for a symphony!

While We're Talking About Human Resources ...

The human resources function plays a critical role in any organization's success (or downfall). It's not simply a back-office support system for your business. HR is a key driver of growth for any company serious about its people, processes and production.

So you know that a positive, engaging workplace culture benefits everyone involved ... but how do you create one?

We've rounded up 4 key reasons why a healthy, robust and organized HR team is critical to organizational growth and success. Read on to find out how you can leverage HR's full potential to grow and sustain a positive work environment and motivated workforce.

We recommend starting out with core values, and aligning those values with desired behaviors, or job outcomes. Here are some things you can do or offer to your employees to help create a conducive work environment that feels good for everyone, inspires creativity, and motivates employees to do their best work.

1. Prioritize Communication and Transparency

  • Regular Updates: Hold team meetings and company-wide town halls to share goals, changes, and successes.
  • Open Door Policy: Encourage leadership to be accessible and responsive.
  • Feedback Culture: Create channels for employees to give and receive feedback constructively.

2. Recognize and Reward Contributions

  • Public Acknowledgment: Celebrate wins during meetings or via internal newsletters.
  • Incentives and Bonuses: Offer performance-based rewards, spot bonuses, or other perks.
  • Peer Recognition Programs: Empower employees to acknowledge each other’s efforts.

3. Invest in Professional Growth

  • Training Opportunities: Offer workshops, courses, and access to learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning.
  • Career Pathing: Provide clear advancement opportunities and mentorship programs.
  • Cross-Training: Encourage employees to learn about other roles or departments.

4. Promote Work-Life Balance

  • Flexible Schedules: Allow hybrid work, flex hours, or compressed workweeks.
  • Generous PTO: Encourage use of vacation time and mental health days.
  • Wellness Programs: Provide resources like meditation apps, wellness stipends, or on-site yoga.

Final Thoughts

Human Resources is truly the backbone of any organization, and it's important to invest in this area of your business. One of the benefits of creating structure and support around HR is that you also begin to create a positive workplace culture and environment, where employees feel motivated. This helps increase employee productivity and retention.
